Burning Household Garbage Is Against the Law!

The North County Fire Protection District is responsible for enforcing rules and regulations governed by the Monterey Bay Air Pollution Control District. This includes burn season as well as burn materials. No material other than naturally grown clippings (i.e., branches, grasses, flower cuttings, etc.) can be burned at any time. All other materials, including sawn lumber such as fencing and/or pallets must be disposed of in an alternate manner such as composting or landfill.

The District's current fee schedule requires District staff to invoice property owners for the reimbursement of actual costs to respond to illegal burning . Do not burn any material other than that which has grown on your property. Do not burn out of burn season. Do not burn without the proper permit.

Residential Burn Season
Residential burning of natural vegetation (branches, leaves, organic trimmings, etc.) is allowed during Residential Burn Season only. Important burn season information is listed below: Agricultural Burn Season
Agricultural operations who receive the majority of their annual income from the property are allowed to burn organic material from the property throughout the year unless a burn banned is issued by the State of California.
  • Permits are available at Station One only at a cost of $17.00 per month..
Permissible Burn Days
Not every day is a permissible burn day! The Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District (MBUAPCD) determines the burn season and permissible burn days. Local fire agencies enforce these regulations. Please contact MBUAPCD for additional information and/or explanation of their regulations:
