Commercial & Residential Inspections


Ensuring public safety and compliance the Uniform Fire Code is a main objective of the North County Fire District's Prevention Division. District engine companies handle most all aspects of residential inspections (sprinkler and finals). Because of their busy schedules pertaining to training and/or drills, all residential inspections must be requested at least 24 hours in advance and must be scheduled through the main business office as referenced below.



Residential Sprinkler Rough-In and Final
Property owners, general contractors, and/or sprinkler contractors must contact our Headquarters Station at 831-633-2578 to schedule these inspections. Minimum 24-hour prior to the requested date of inspection is required. Please have Assessor's Parcel Number (APN), site address, and building permit number with you at the time of the call. A $170.00 charge will be assessed on all re-inspections required by failure to meet standard or by request of owner/applicant for occupancy prior to final.


Sprinkler Rough In Request Requirements/Check List
Before contacting the headquarters station to schedule an inspection, be sure the following items are in compliance, on the premises, and ready for engine company inspection.

1. The temporary address must be posted at the driveway and on the house.
2. The approved sprinkler plans and calculations must be on site.
3. Any and all construction changes must be red-lined on the plans.
4. They hydrostatic test must have been witnessed prior to our arrival.
5. A Certificate of Test must be provided to NCFD at the time of inspection.
6. The building permit must be on site.


Final Inspection Request Requirements/Check List
Before contacting the headquarters station to schedule an inspection, be sure the following items are in compliance, on the premises, and ready for engine company inspection.

1. The permanent address must be posted at the driveway (both ways of travel - 4" minimum height) and on the house
(3 1/2" minimum height - contrasting color).
2. The driveway/roadway must be complete and in compliance with fire department applied conditions.
3. If in State Responsibility Area for wild land fires (which all rural areas of our District is SRA) then all excess vegetation must be cleared around all structures (30' minimum) as outlined in our defensible space standard (Ordinance 3600: ground cover, tree limbs, chimneys, etc.)
4. The approved sprinkler plans and calculations must be on site.
5. The approved construction plans must be on site.
6. Any and all construction changes must be red-lined on the plans.
7. The building permit must be on site.
8. A sprinkler system representative and the general contractor and/or owner must be at the site at the time of final. NO EXCEPTIONS!


Commercial Rough-In and Final
Due to the extensive code requirements on most commercial inspections, property owners, general contractors, and/or sprinkler contractors must contact our Fire Marshal at our Headquarters Station at 831-633-2578 to schedule these inspections. If he is not available at the time of your call, it is strongly recommended that you leave a voice mail message as he maintains his own appointments.


Other Inspections and Site Visits
Other inspections such as fire clearance for state or county requested inspections, ansel/hood systems, alarm systems, underground tank removals, water flow data request, special events (dance, carnivals, etc.), must be scheduled through the Fire Marshal at our Headquarters Station at 831-633-2578. If he is not available at the time of your call, it is strongly recommended that you leave a voice mail message as he maintains his own appointments.
