The Chief

Welcome to the North County Fire District’s new web-site.  We hope it will provide you with the information and features that you need and want.   On this site we have included our budget, our annual audits, meeting minutes and agendas.   We hope to provide important, timely information that you can use to help make your life safer and better.

As you probably know, you have an outstanding group of firefighters working for this community. I am very proud of our firefighters and the work they do.   We provide a high-quality level of service with dedicated, highly trained professionals while living within our finances.   Our Fire District has been the leader in meeting the challenges of this down economy.  Our personnel have held the line on wages, decreased office staff, enacted a 2nd, lower retirement tier, maximized grant funding to enhance our local dollars, and decreased our overall costs.  We have done all that and maintained our level of service.

The North County Fire District consists of 26 full time line firefighters, 30 reserve paid-call firefighters, four chief officer and one office administrator.   Our full time firefighters staff our three duty engines 24 hours a day 365 days per year.  When a big incident or multiple incidents happen, our paid-call reserve and off-duty firefighters respond to the stations to staff our reserve engines.

Our equipment responds to an average of 2400 calls for help each year.  About 1500 calls are for medical issues including an average of 450 car wrecks.  We send approximately 100 people to trauma centers.  We are able to arrive at emergency medical incidents in less than 8 minutes 90% of the time.

We respond to many reports of fires and fire alarms, but over 200 hundred calls per year are for “working fires” or fires that are not out prior to our arrival.  These included vegetation fires, car fires, and building fires.  In 2010, we responded to more than 20 house fires that did more than $1 million of damage.  It is fortunate that we had no loss of life due to fire.

You know, it would be a delight to imagine a day when we never needed to respond to emergencies. But the reality is that bad things happen and we know that our services will be needed.  We pledge to always be ready for any type of emergency, but we’ll continue to work together with you to decrease the need for our response.  Stay safe.

Sincerely,

Chris W. Orman, Fire Chief
